The moment we got in the car, I said, “So, what did you think?”

He started the car and said, “Let me get us out of here, get the heat going, and I’ll tell you.”

I gazed out the window. It was a gray February day. The neighborhood looked colorful, though—a lot of renovation going on of old Victorians, alongside some ultra-modern places. But the Wells’ home struck me as being frozen in time. I imagined it looked much the same way when Ms. Wells was growing up, a modest home where everything was neat, orderly, and carefully coordinated.

“Well,” Cody said, “I felt really awful for Ms. Wells. The guy was a jerk running out on her like that. And then her parents taking the baby when she changed her mind? Not cool. And her mother—straight out of the 1950s with that crap about ‘we’re not prejudiced, but…’”

“Yeah, kind of a running joke in my community. The minute anyone starts a sentence with, ‘I’m not prejudiced, but…’ it’s like a flashing neon sign announcing, ‘Here comes the racist remark.’”

“You practically agreed with her,” he said, and shot me an accusing look as he pulled on to the highway.

“Hey—I just didn’t want to shut her down, and truth is, a lot of folks still feel that way, and there’s no point in pretending they don’t.” I shivered and planted my hands in front of the blowers to warm them up.

“Maybe not, but I think more and more people couldn’t care less about who people choose to love and be with. Look what’s happened with gay rights. It’s amazing!”

“True.” Time to change the subject before Cody pivoted back to discussing us and my refusal to date him. “I want to see if that doctor might still be around. Can I borrow your phone?”

He handed it to me.

I scrolled through the Yellow Page listings for physicians in Somerville. “Looks like there’s a Raymond Fitzgerald, Jr. here. Do you think that could be his son?”

“No idea, but let’s try calling tomorrow. Meantime, you up for having dinner on the road?”

I grinned. “You read my mind—I’m already getting hungry.”

“What do you feel like eating?”

Before I could answer, his phone beeped.

“Mind checking my text?” he said.

“Looks like it’s from Jody,” I said. “Oh my God. Britt just tried to kill herself—Jody wants you to come right away. They’re at County General.”

Color drained from Cody’s face. “Tell her we’re on our way,” he said.
